School History & Achievements

Government Girls Higher Secondary School Kangan Ganderbal has a glorious history spanning over 70 years of dedicated service to girl child education in the Kashmir Valley. The school was established in 1954 as a Middle School by the then Government of Jammu and Kashmir with just 50 students and 5 teachers [citation:1]. Recognizing the need for girls' education in the region, the school was upgraded to a High School in 1968 and finally achieved Higher Secondary status in 1982. Since its inception, the institution has been a pioneer in promoting female literacy and empowerment in a region where traditional norms often limited educational opportunities for girls. The school's commitment to societal progress is evident through its active participation in initiatives like the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' (Save the girl child, educate the girl child) campaign, where it has organized awareness rallies to champion gender equality [citation:8].

The school has consistently produced outstanding academic results in JKBOSE examinations. In the last decade alone, over 2,500 students have passed their 10th and 12th standard examinations with distinction. Our students have secured top positions at the district level multiple times, with several students featuring in the top 50 list of the entire Kashmir division. In the 2023-24 academic session, our school recorded an impressive pass percentage of 94% in 10th standard and 89% in 12th standard examinations, surpassing the district average by a significant margin.

Our distinguished alumni include Dr. Sameena Abdullah (IAS Officer, 2015 batch), Prof. Nusrat Jan (Head of Department of Botany, University of Kashmir), Ms. Shazia Malik (Civil Judge, Kangan Ganderbal), Dr. Rubina Akhtar (Senior Gynecologist at SMHS Hospital Srinagar), Ms. Mehnaz Rasool (First female pilot from Kangan Ganderbal district), and hundreds of other successful professionals serving as doctors, engineers, teachers, government administrators, entrepreneurs, and social workers across India and abroad. Many of our former students have also made significant contributions to the local community by establishing schools, healthcare centers, and women's self-help groups.

Beyond academics, our students have brought laurels in sports, showcasing exceptional skill and determination. GHSS Kangan has a strong tradition in athletics, having triumphed in zonal-level competitions such as the Handball championship [citation:3] and securing victories in Kabaddi events for both under-17 and under-19 categories [citation:4]. The school was also honored with the "Nari Shakti Puraskar" by the District Administration Kangan Ganderbal in 2022 for our outstanding contribution to women's education and empowerment. Our students have represented Jammu and Kashmir at the National Level Badminton Championship (2024).

Currently, the school has a student strength of 850+ girls and a dedicated faculty of 35 teachers, including 8 Postgraduates, 2 PhD holders, and 25 graduates with B.Ed qualifications. The school operates in two shifts - morning shift (8:00 AM to 1:00 PM) for 9th and 10th standards, and day shift (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM) for 11th and 12th standards. We offer specialized coaching for competitive examinations like NEET, JEE, and various government job entrance tests through our Career Counseling Cell. The school also runs a Remedial Teaching Program for academically weak students and a Scholarship Program for meritorious students from economically weaker sections.

Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans for further development including the establishment of a Skill Development Centre offering vocational courses in Computer Applications, Fashion Designing, and Handicraft Training, construction of a new Science Block with advanced laboratory facilities, installation of a solar power plant to make our campus energy self-sufficient, and launch of a Digital Learning Initiative providing tablets to meritorious students. The school remains committed to its founding principle of providing quality education to every girl child, regardless of her background, and continues to work tirelessly towards creating a more educated, empowered, and equitable society in the Kangan Ganderbal district and beyond.
